Deree reaches another debate final
Deree scored another debating success in the Belgrade Open. Defending champions Manos Moschopoulos and Matt Simunec reached the grand final of the competition, losing to the team from the University of Ljubljana in a 3-2 decision by the adjudication panel.
The Deree team was assigned the task of defending the criminalization of genocide denial, using examples from recent events and stressing the importance of shared cultural memories. The event was organized under the auspices of the OSCE and was one of the democratization activities the organization undertakes in former Yugoslavia.
The Debating Club was also represented in the World Universities Debating Championships, where the same team reached the top 16 of the English as a Second Language Category with Moschopoulos ranking as the 7th best ESL speaker.
It also participated in the Amsterdam Open where the Deree team ranked 5th best ESL team, missing the final by the smallest possible difference in debating: one speaker point.
The next competition for the Club is the European Universities Debating Championships, which will be held by the University of Newcastle in August. The Club hopes to repeat the successes of the 90s, when it reached the finals of the event and had won the ESL competition in 1999.
