Another one?!?

Construction work obstructs the view of the new fine arts center. Although the building is complete and classes have already begun, construction workers are still building something on the second floor.

Around the busy site amidst the dust-filled air, chairs and lamps clutter the floor and a glass counter faces the front windows. The familiar green letter waiting to be added to the building’s façade can only mean one thing: another Starbucks.

"We should be finished in November," said a sweating Nikos Tsouroulas, the construction foreman. Progress has been quick, with the kitchen and serving counter already complete, and signs with the traditional "coffee of the day" set up.

"The main store is already finished," said Tsouroulas, "But the outside is taking a long time."

At first glance, the new amphitheater off the walk to the church is the perfect location for Starbucks’ outside area. It’s secluded from the busy bustle of the campus. Instead, it will be right in front of the fine arts building, overlooking the road up to communications. It’ll be a place for students to sit and sip their coffee.

Most students have no idea that a Starbucks is being built, but eyes light up when they hear the good news.

"I know we have a Starbucks down at the plateia of Agia Iouannou, and even one further down at Agia Paraskevi, but I’m lazy," said Dimitri Gasparakis, a communication student. "Smoking might be a problem, though, since Starbucks is non-smoking, but you need to have a cigarette with your morning coffee." To sit outside is the solution for the avid smoker, but what about the winter when it’s freezing?

"Starbucks uses heaters in all of its outside areas throughout Greece. I’m positive this shop will not be an exception," said Tsouroulas. Outside heaters are scattered amongst the chairs and couches to compensate for the cold, and they give off the warmth of a slow fire.

Midterms and projects are overwhelming during this time of year, but students have caramel macchiatos and mocha coconut frappucinos right on campus to treat themselves to when it’s all over.
