Deree College Ambassadors: Truly international?

New enrollment in the Deree College Ambassadors has added to the Organization’s diversity in terms of nationality and ethnicity.

The Deree College Ambassadors are a 12 year old Organization that has been representing the College effectively and efficiently throughout these past years. There has been little change in the number of international students attending Deree College and the Junior College but there has been an increase in the diversity of international students in terms of nationality.

In the beginning the DCA comprised almost entirely Greek students, but the organization adapted to the changes of the ACG student population. The Deree College Ambassadors now comprise in large part international students and other students with family ties and relations with other countries.… Continue reading

Student Government collects items for fire victims

The Student Government is collecting items ranging from clothing and personal hygiene products to notebooks and Greek literature books for the victims of this September’s devastating forest fires in mainland Greece and the Peloponnese.

Items collected include soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, toothbrushes, notebooks, pens, pencils, linen and canned food and other edibles that do not require refrigeration such as beans and pasta.

All gathered aid will be delivered by College community members to local authorities, while the Student Affairs office has contacted local educators in order to better determine the needs of the local high school students.

As one professor from the Ilia prefecture said in an e-mail in September, local educators “can’t even ask [their] students to purchase notebooks.”

Student leaders meet with trustees

Two ACG Student Government members and other members of Clubs, Societies and Organizations met the Chairman and two other members of the Board of Trustees to exchange views about the present and the future of the College.

Chairman Peter Thun and members Charles Cook and Dorothy Mitchell met with students representing virtually all major areas of study within Deree to discuss the everyday life of a student at the College.

The students were drawn from the governing bodies of the most active clubs, societies and organizations on Campus: the Art History Society, the History Society, the Debating Club and the Ambassadors.

Chairman Thun said that the process was beneficial for the Trustees. More meetings are expected to be scheduled soon.

Art Exhibition 2005

The Art History Society displayed several selections of student art during the last week of classes. The Art Techniques, Drawing and Painting classes contributed to the collection.

The exhibit was also meant to promote the study of art history. Pamphlets were available to students that informed them of the various art history courses offered by the college and the potential career opportunities associated with the discipline.

XXX Deree College Invitational Debating Tournament

The Deree College Debating Club organized its thirtieth annual Debating Invitational Tournament with 52 teams participating, including a team from Turkey and a hybrid team composed of a Greek and Croatian debater. The winning team of the November 4-5 tournament was “Equality for men” with George Krezias and Christos Samelis.

For the first time in its history the tournament featured two Masters’ rounds, in which eight of the best Greek debating teams participated. The winners of the Masters’ tournament were Tasos Katehis and Philip Abatzoglou, both Deree College alumni.

“The XXX Invitational was a huge success because it brought alumni together with the new generation of debate; it brought together old ideas with new,” said Maria Avgitidis, an organizer of… Continue reading

Persuade, communicate and have fun

The clock strikes 6:45 p.m. The teams’ preparation time is over and Manolis Moschopoulos grabs his seat. Old members escort their partners, all new members, in to Room 602. The debating session is ready to begin.

“I call this house to order,” said Moschopoulos, president of the debating club. The new members scan the room. Some nibble on their pens; others flip through their notes. Their partners, familiar with the norms, sit back and face their opposition, and the first speaker is ready to take the floor.

The debating club is back in business. Voted Student Union’s Best Club of the Year for 2004-2005, the club is in its eighteenth year.

With a firm agenda for the year ahead, the… Continue reading

A Black Box full of Scripts, Fruits and the Importance of Being Ernest

It’s 6:15 p.m. on a Monday and the Deree Drama Club is gathered outside the Black Box Theater, getting ready for its regular rehearsal. “It’s time to go in guys,” shouts the director, and the production moves into the dark Box.

They kick off their shoes and start with their exercises, inhaling and exhaling always from the stomach. A couple of minutes later, they all take their up scripts and start reading their parts out loud. But this is no ordinary rehearsal. Along with the script, each actor has a piece fruit in his hand. The task is to learn how to talk and eat at the same time.

The Deree Drama Club decided in the spring of 2004 to… Continue reading

Drama Club actress bows out with fond memories

The Deree Drama Club has just taken its bows after the premier of Oscar Wilde’s play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Nicole Kalogeropoulos, who played grumpy Lady Bracknell, the mother of Gwendolyn, stands outside the Black Box Theater cradling bouquets of flowers in her arms. Every time she starts walking towards the entrance of the Communication building, spectators who want to congratulate her on her performance stop her.

Nicole owns a room the minute she enters it. Several months after the last performance of the play and far away from the stage and applauding crowd, she sat in room 705 wearing a denim shirt and beige pants – and the aura of a star. But the Miami-born Nicole may end… Continue reading
