Students Raise Funds for Haiti Quake Victims

Deree College students are joining efforts to raise money for Haiti, devastated by an earthquake on January 12. Ten days after the quake, the Haitian government numbered the dead at 150,000.

Over half a million people have been left homeless in what was the poorest country in the Americas even before the earthquake.

As Haitians – many injured and grieving the loss of family members – struggle to survive amid the rubble of Port-au-Prince and other heavily populated areas, without clean water, electricity, food, or medical care, people around the world have rushed to provide assistance.

Like the rest of his work, too, it ensures that Dr. Zafiropoulos will still be there, just beneath the surface, for those who knew him as colleague, mentor, teacher: friend.

“He took pleasure in sharing his experiences and knowledge with others,” mused Dr. Anastasia… Continue reading

Now, as she prepares to don cap and gown and receive her bachelor’s degree on graduation day, she says the college has prepared her for her next academic challenge. She starts a master’s degree in media, gender and culture at the London School of Economics this autumn.

Bourma’s experience typifies that of other Deree students who say the college gives them the chance to excel, broadening their intellectual horizons and opening academic doors at the world’s best graduate schools.

“One of the things I liked about Deree was that you have to work hard to do really well here,” said Bourma, who has a 3.7 cumulative… Continue reading
