Greek Participants
Chafez Samy
My name is Samy Chafez and I’m Greek Egyptian. I’ve been raised in Greece, Saudi Arabia and The Netherlands. I’m currently studying International Business and European Affairs in The American College of Greece.
I will also be attending for a study abroad program in Korea during the summer of 2014 with the help of the two generous scholarships granted through the Heritage Greece program and The Athenian Brewery Company. When not in campus I enjoy swimming, martial arts and staying updated with the news.
The reason I want to become an ACG peer is because I feel that the interactive experience that the heritage Greece program has to offer provides me with an opportunity to discover new people, exchange ideas and beliefs and thus enhance my opinions and perspective overall.
Doulou Claudia Maria
My name is Claudia Maria Doulou. I am currently finishing my second year in Deree, and I am planning on doing a semester abroad in September. I am 19 years old and a visual arts student. Being an Acg peer, is a great opportunity to get to know our culture better by helping others understand it. Through Heritage Greece you come to cherish and value your own culture, which in some cases you tend to overlook. It is a great opportunity to get to know other people who are interested in learning about Greece, and the Greek culture and exchanging ideas and beliefs. Through heritage Greece and thus being an Acg peer you are given the opportunity to teach people about your own culture and learn by them whilst assisting other students. I really like to travel and swim. I enjoy playing tennis from time to time and generally being exposed to new adventures. Last but not least I find it very intriguing to give back to others so I find volunteering extremely interesting, thus I decided to go to Morocco in the summer to work as a volunteer.
Gkioumes Omiros
Hello, my name is Omiros Gkioumes I am a freshman Management student with concentration in Shipping and this year I was fortunate enough to be one of the ACG peers that will partake in the Heritage Greece program. Multitasking is one of my assets and the reason why I like covering my spare time doing several recreational activities such as swimming, reading (books, newspapers, articles) and of course participating actively in many groups, clubs, organizations of my interest in ACG. The very first time that I heard about Heritage Greece program I was pretty amazed. In fact I was really stunned when I realized that there are still people who care about transmitting and preserving the rich Greek legacy to newer generations. Thanks to the National Hellenic Society and the American College of Greece-Deree it was given to me a unique probably in lifetime chance in order to teach these peers from America and help them enrich their Greek identity in the same time that I will gain a lot from them such as global knowledge, understandings and why not long-lasting friendships. I am totally convinced that a really amazing journey is ahead of us and when we reach our final destination we will all have acquired unforgettable memories, knowledge and happiness.
Panopoulou Ioanna
My name is Ioanna Panopoulou. I am 23 years old. I am a senior student majoring in psychology. During my studies, I have worked in several institutions in order to explore further my professional interests. In my personal life I am an outgoing person, I love travelling, doing sports and engage in cultural activities.
The Heritage in Greece Program will offer me the chance to accompany American students of my age, who have had an entirely different upbringing, culture and lifestyle than I have. I am enthusiastic about contributing to this program and help students to explore the Greek culture in such a way that their journey in Greece will be a unique and fun experience. I am also curious to see my own country, history and culture through the eyes of others because having lived in Greece all my life inevitably made me take many things for granted. I would like my potential American friends to experience the Greek lifestyle as perceived by Greeks.
Papadopoulos Nikolaos
My name is Nikolaos Papadopoulos, I’m 21 years old and I am doing a Management Major here at Deree. My interests are mainly music, fitness, technology, going for walks with friends or family and sightseeing. The reason I was interested in becoming an ACG peer is that I will have the chance to get in touch with people that share the same ancestry with us, but were born and raised at a whole different place. This is going to be a great opportunity to see in what ways we are same but also different, talk about our lifestyles and of course let them in the cultural aspects of Greece, which we are accustomed to but for them will probably be mostly foreign.
Papaspyrou Rene
My name is Rene, I’m 19 years old and I study psychology at Deree -The American College of Greece. I am half Greek- half American. Even though I love Greece (the place where I was born and raised), a big part of me feels like it belongs in America, thus one of my aspirations is to one day move there and be a school psychologist. I also love sports, soccer, taekwondo and anything extreme for that matter. I think one of my dreams, apart from practicing psychology, would be to play professional soccer and travel around the world. It is a big dream for the time being but anything is possible! Music and art are ways that I pass my time creatively. Of course going out or getting together with friends and having fun are part of my everyday life as well. All in all, I’m really excited to be an ACG peer. I find it will be a very special experience. This program is especially exciting and I can’t think of a better way for someone to get to know their roots, than to go back to them.
Togas Konstantinos
My name is Konstantinos Togas I am twenty one years old and I am from Athens, Greece. I play guitar and drums, I like educate myself, do sports and I enjoy very much meeting new people and try new experiences. When I heard about the Heritage program I was attracted instantly with this wonderful idea. I believe it is a great opportunity to discover my country better and also to introduce all our wonderful places to our guests.
Tsapara Paraskevi
My name is Paraskevi Tsapara, but people call me Evi. I am 19 years old and a Psychology Major. I’m very interested in all kinds of music, books, surfing the Internet and going out with friends. I also enjoy cooking and I’m currently trying to teach myself how to play the acoustic guitar. I love meeting new people and that was one of the reasons I decided to join Heritage Greece. This program is not only a great chance to learn more things about my country, but to get more involved too. I was interested in being an ACG Peer because I thought that travelling with Greek-Americans around Greece would be a great experience and I’d be able to practice the English language and both rediscover and reuse my Greek. Finally, as a part of the Heritage Greece Program, I was sure I would be able to explore my Greek roots and connect to my country, while having fun with people of my age. I find this program an amazing opportunity, and I’m very excited and grateful to be a part of it.
Raskovic George
Hello, my name is George Raskovic and I am a student at the American College of Greece. Within the college, my favorite activities always involved social events and volunteer work that allowed me to interact and help people of all ages.
Thus it was a very easy choice for me to decide to join the Heritage Greece program, since it will allow me to meet with peers from a different social and cultural background. It will allow me to rediscover my home country from a perspective that I never had the chance to experience.
For these reasons I am very excited to join the program as an ACG Peer and experience it to it’s fullest.
