Cycling 800 kilometres through Greece to raise funds for scholarships is an impressive feat, and Dimitris Politis’ (DEREE ’90) inspiring ACG Bike-A-Thon (link to www.acg.edu/bikeathon) in April single-handedly raised €15,000 ($20,000) for DEREE and PIERCE students.
In the first such endeavor in the College’s history, Politis took on the challenge in order to raise funds for four DEREE and four PIERCE scholarships in “Give Education a Spin,” and says he was moved by the more than 500 ACG alumni, faculty, staff and friends who took part in the fundraiser.
“I was impressed by how the College community turned out to support this important initiative, in spite of the crisis – or maybe because of it – people are willing to help others,” says Politis, who paid all related expenses himself, and took leave from his banking job in Switzerland to cycle through Thessaloniki, Ioannina and Patra before arriving to a warm and enthusiastic reception at ACG’s Aghia Paraskevi campus.
Politis told well-wishers that he hoped to raise funds through the event so that more young people could enjoy the quality education and opportunities DEREE afforded him.
President Horner congratulated Politis and underlined that ACG is “tremendously grateful for the support that has moved us closer to our goals and we hope others will join as we work to help students achieve their educational dreams. The more we do to help the youth of Greece prepare for the future, the better off everyone will be.”
The ACG Bike-A-Thon was organized by PIERCE and DEREE students, alumni, staff and faculty of The American College of Greece, with the support of the Attica Tradition Foundation.
