Welcome new ACG Alumni! Dr Linda Katehi & Mr Spiros Bouas to speak at Commencements
It’s that special time of year again when new alumni are about to join our family of more than 37,000 proud ACG (PIERCE, DEREE & ALBA) graduates from around the world; a time of endings and beginnings, hope, anticipation and parting words of wisdom.
This year, Dr Linda P. B. Katehi, chancellor of the University of California, Davis, will be recognized for her work with the honorary degree Doctor of Science Honoris Causa at the DEREE 2014 Commencement on June 28th at 20:30 at the DEREE Soccer Stadium.
Mr Spiros Bouas, co-founder of LitePoint, and the benefactor of the Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School scholarships for PIERCE students, will be delivering the keynote speech at the PIERCE 2014 Commencement – taking place on July 2nd at 20:00 at the PIERCE Theater.
Commencement gives “faculty and staff the opportunity to see and feel the fruits of their labor,” says Dr Thimios Zaharopoulos, Provost at DEREE, while it also provides “students the opportunity to feel the impact of their accomplishments and contemplate the next phase of their life.
“It also allows parents and loved ones to express their much-deserved pride. ACG makes this event extremely meaningful and memorable, because it represents the very reason we exist,” says Dr Zaharopoulos.
“Commencement is a once-in-a-lifetime moment; one that leaves its memories on you forever,” says PIERCE Principal Olga E. Julius, adding, “the entire serious and significant ceremony symbolizes the advancement from secondary school level to the university level.
“We at PIERCE prepare our students for their debut into the next phase of their lives: they are knowledgeable, have broadened their horizons, are mentally and physically ready to face their new challenges, and to be positive and open to all possibilities. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, ‘Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
Commencement is dedicated to all those students who have worked hard and will soon become alumni, leaving behind the familiar and treading into the unknown. You have been students for a few years, but you are alumni for life.
There will be parting words of inspiration and hope from fellow students, faculty and guests, who will share their experiences and insights, as ACG’s newest alumni embark on the next chapter of their lives.
