On Wednesday September 7, Alba and Deree celebrated their acceptance as the first Academic Institution to be named a Green Award Incentive Provider.
Green Award inspects and certifies shipping companies and ships that go well over and above statutory requirements. Ships and companies, which have succeeded in complying with the Green Award standards, get a certificate. Ports and maritime sector companies reward their efforts by offering special deals and discounts.
By joining the certification scheme, Alba and Deree will endorse achievements of Green Award certificate holders, furthering the non-profit’s ambition to “drive the highest standards in environmental performance and safety in shipping.”
Green Award Chairman, Captain Dimitrios Mattheou, met with ACG President David G. Horner and Alba Dean Kostas Axarloglou at the ceremony on September 7. “Alba and Deree are dedicated to educate visionary leaders of tomorrow, who will act as agents of change and help shape the future business world,” Captain Mattheou said, as ACG will now offer all Green Award certified companies’ and vessels’ employees and their children a 10% scholarship on undergraduate, graduate, and executive courses.
“In recent years The American College of Greece has committed itself to implementing a comprehensive sustainability initiative,” said Dr. Horner. “Last year we were proud to be the first college or university in Europe and only the third outside the United States and Canada to receive a STARS rating. Supporting the Green Award is a wonderful addition to our growing portfolio of sustainability activities.”
