Professionals from small and large enterprises – even as far away as Israel – and from state organizations, such as Greek municipalities, joined students, faculty, and guests for a five-day interdisciplinary workshop on Waste Management, which wrapped up with a visit to a recycling facility in eastern Attica on May 22.
The workshop, organized by The School of Graduate and Professional Education of DEREE-The American College of Greece in collaboration with the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University and the Waste to Energy Research & Technology Council – WTERT Greece/SYNERGIA, was held at the DEREE Ag. Paraskevi campus and afforded participants all the latest know-how and advances in the field of Waste Management.
“We had good, quality participation,” says Dr. Efstratios Kalogirou, Vice Chair Global WTERT Council, who alongside other experts from prestigious institutions and key industry insiders hosted the workshop “Advancing State of the Art Sustainable Waste Management in Southern Europe and the Middle East.”
“We had engineers, students, business people from big and small companies, forest personnel, scientists and others whose work involves around waste management. It was a good, quality mix,” Dr. Kalogirou added.
The workshop focused on cutting-edge technologies for sustainable waste management and their potential application in Southern Europe and the Middle East.
“It was a good workshop that covered a lot of interesting topics from technological to socio-political issues, and I look forward on behalf of ACG to hosting it here again,” said Dr. Christina Marouli, Director of The American College of Greece’s Center of Excellence for Sustainability, and Professor in DEREE-ACG’s Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Environmental Studies Program, who co-instructed the workshop alongside Dr. Kalogirou and a slew of other experts:
Dr. Gregory S. Yovanof, Professor of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Athens Information Technology (AIT), Dr. Goran Vujic, Professor and Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Technical Science, University of Novi Sad, Dr. Adamantios Skordilis , General Director of the National Organization for Recycling (EOAN), Dr. Panagiotis Grammelis, Director of the Laboratory of Alternative Fuels & Technologies, Senior Researcher in the Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute (CERTH/ CPERI), Carles Salesa Mirabet, General Director of CONSORCI, Mataro, Spain, Cornelius Andrianos Vekkos, General Manager at ECOVRS, Partner of the National Technical University and the Agricultural University of Athens, and Maria Vitoraki, Professor of Environmental Science at DEREE-The American College of Greece.
Following the workshop, an official ceremony was held honoring participants with a Certificate of completing course requirements satisfactorily, issued by the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University. The EEC is recognized by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for issuing Continuing Education Credits.
Participants also received a CD with all the workshop material, and after the ceremony visited the high-tech Mechanical Recycling Facility in Koropi, Attica.
