A fascinating new week-long event took place on the DEREE campus this semester, aiming to raise awareness about people with disabilities through experiential activities.
The Event
The Discover Disability & Diversity week was organized by the DEREE Health & Social Awareness Club and offered a multitude of events. October 19 – 23 were filled with games, workshops, lectures, discussions, and the sharing of personal stories and experiences. Many of the events included participation by the Greek NGOs Amimoni, To Ergastiri, Argo, Estia, Theotokos, and S.K.E.P.
One of the highlights was the ‘simulation for physical disabilities’, a hands-on workshop by Amimoni, with activities involving movement and orientation, eating, running, and sound.
The Club
The HSA club, with sociology professor Evangelia Andreadou-Samara as its advisor, and student Ersi Drosou as president, was recently nominated for Outstanding Leadership and Contribution to Student Life in the June 2015 Student Awards Ceremony. Discover Disability & Diversity Week is the brainchild of student Aggelina Bouzo, a member of the Health & Social Awareness Club since last March.
Lastly we should also mention that amidst this busy week, the club managed to also organize a Blood Drive– a huge bravo to everyone involved!
