Messages – Ultra
Utilizing messages can be an effective means of staying connected with your students and providing them with a more tailored educational experience. Blackboard SaaS offers various access points that enable you to promptly act upon information by sending messages to your students. For instance, you can conveniently message a student directly from an assessment’s Student Activity page if they submitted the assessment late. Messaging can be done between you and your students, multiple individuals, or even an entire class. Messages remain within the system, eliminating the need to worry about outdated or incorrect email addresses.
You can access the message from the Base Navigation menu. As an instructor, you can send messages quickly to all students of your course through the Messages tab about important deadlines and schedules.
Unread message notifications
Whenever you receive new messages, the system shows the count of unread messages in red color to grab your attention. However, when you select the Messages page from the navigation menu, the count changes to a red pill icon to avoid distraction. Additionally, when you leave the Messages page and come back again, the system displays the unread message count to keep you updated. Moreover, the courses with unread messages will appear at the top of the Messages page.
To access your messages in a course, simply visit the Messages page where you’ll see the number of unread messages displayed in a red circle. All of your course messages and responses can be found on this page, making it easy to review the entire list and open any message to read all the responses. Unread messages will be displayed first in the list and will be marked by a red circle next to the sender’s name. Additionally, each message will display the sender’s profile picture, and under their name, you’ll be able to view how many participants are included or if the message is for the whole class.
A. New message. Select the “New Message” button to send a message. Send to one person, multiple people, a group, or the entire class.
B. How many messages per page. If you have many messages, you can increase or decrease how many messages you want the screen to display.
C. Delete a message. Use the “Bin” button to delete a message. You can’t edit or delete individual responses in a message.
D. Navigate to another message. Messages open in a panel with all the responses. Use the “View Previous Messages” and “Next Message” buttons at the top to view the previous or next message in the list.
E. Add more people. When you create or respond to a message, select the “Add Participants” button to add students, unless the message was sent to the entire class.
F. Follow a conversation. If you click on any part of a message, you can view the entire conversation thread in which that message was sent or received. On the Messages page of your course, the latest message in a thread is shown. You can identify your own messages by the presence of a “(You)” label that appears next to your name.
Read-only course messages for students
When this setting is enabled, students are only able to view messages sent by other roles, such as instructors and teaching assistants, but they won’t be able to send replies or create new messages themselves. Moreover, students won’t be able to forward any messages they receive.
If students are not allowed to modify course messages, you will receive a notification when you try to create a message. The “Allow replies to this message” option determines which course members, such as other instructors and teaching assistants, are allowed to reply to and create messages.
